    Description

CAPER’S NOTES ON THE MARKS OF PRUSSIA
by R.H. Capers, Alphabet Printing Inc., IL, 1996.
This comprehensive text provides an in-depth scholarly survey of German “R.S.” or “Schlegelmilch” porcelain.  The book reviews the “story behind the manufacturing of this china” and the “historical and geographical perspective which places the times and locations of the Schlegelmilch factories.”  Of special merit is the coding system the author set up to identify and date Prussian china which takes into account the mold pattern, decoration and logo itself. Later chapters have arranged the china by factories: “Chapter Three is devoted to the ES Family of Factories; these being the facilities known as Erdmann Schlegelmilch, Carl Schlegelmilch, and Oscar Schlegelmilch.  Chapter Four is devoted to the facilities of Reinhold Schlegelmilch.”  The marks and logos of these makers are discussed at length.  Later chapters present marks along side examples of the piece of china on which the mark is appears.  Rounding out this book, the author provides “information about the two porcelain factories which operated in Tillowitz before and after the Reinhold Schlegelmilch company.  The impact of the R.S. factory on the earlier founded
    Graf Frankenberg’ische Porzellanmanufaktur
is discussed and marks for that firm are shown.  Marks are also shown for
    Porcelitu Tulowice
, the actual successor to the Reinhold Schlegelmilch Tillowitz factory after World War II.  This company is currently in operation [see date of book’s publication].”
The comprehensive research, copious color photographs of marks and patterns, and scholarly research information on the evolution and  development of this china make this book an invaluable resource reference work for the collector, dealer, or historian of German Prussian china.
