- Hannah Pottery booklet, entitled Hannah ~ Pioneer Potters on the Rogue
Printed for the Southern Oregon Historical Society exhibition in 1988
8 x 8" sc 12 pg., in fine condition. Photos b&w, and in Color too.
This booklet is not only historically informative, but also an aid in their identification.
This the only known compilation on Hanna Pottery ever.
Too, you're unlikely to find such representation in any other pottery or stoneware guides .....
Josiah Hanna arrived in Missouri in 1840, and later with his son Joseph, spent 20 years learning the pottery craft from their in-laws Robert & Thomas Caldwell.
Thomas established the Caldwell Pottery in 1826 in the small village of Pottersville (
later named Caldwell
) southwest of Fulton, Missouri.
The Caldwell family had apprenticed with German potter named Lears, near Paris, Kentucky, where they learned to produce salt ware in the old German tradition.
Circa 1862, Josiah moved his family to the Rogue Valley in Oregon and after establishing his farm subsequently started his own pottery, producing utilitarian pottery for 40 years.
As with many such potteries, the onset of more modern tin and glass canning jars for food storage caused their demise.
As a consequence such pottery remains
rare
to find today.
Too, though most of such pottery is unmarked, many had a size number marking and/or other clues.
Once one becomes familiar with this types of pottery, one can usually spot them from a distance, as I am able.
This booklet is not only historically informative, but also an aid in their identification.

FINE PRINT!
Please read before bidding.
I attempt as accurate description as possible, and include photo/s. Unintended errors and omissions may occur, so I strongly urge all bidders to examine all here, and email me with any questions, clarifications, or concerns prior to bidding. I will do my best to answer or clarify asap.
I'm no expert on anything, and determine quality or condition based on my subjective judgment, if given. Since quality or condition is highly subjective, and since most I offer here may be USED, OLD or VINTAGE, all items are offered "AS IS" and all sales are final unless I have grossly misrepresented the item! Don't bid unless you want to own it! I will do my best to work out any problem, should one arise, before & after auction closes.
Finally, my items and packing materials often are used/recycles, and as such I can not gaurantee that they have never been exposed to dirt, dust, airborne allergens, peanuts, wild women, wild men, smoke, alcohol, children, ozone, animals, bugs, politicians, petroleum products, or other irritants, including irritating people.
If any of those things bother you, then please do not bid.
Thanks for your understanding, and Good Luck.
